Financial truth

Diesel is needed as insurance,
but not as a permanent economy

Every hour of a generator is expensive: fuel, service, noise, logistics and wear and tear. BESS does not always replace diesel completely, but it dramatically reduces its operation, smooths out peaks and returns part of the investment through tariff arbitrage and Peak Shaving. Start with a rough ROI estimate:

BESS/UZE industrial reliability architecture

We do not put "garage" assemblies of used car parts at enterprises. In an industrial BESS, the price of error is too high: simple, fire risks, warranty problems and insurance issues. Therefore, we work with Tier-1 factory solutions: CATL, EVE, BYD, SolaX, Deye and components that comply with UL9540A, IEC 62619, UN38.3.

Smart Liquid Cooling

Liquid cooling keeps cell temperatures more even than air cooling, especially in cabinets and large containers. Less temperature spread means slower degradation, more stable SoH and less parasitic consumption on climate control.

  • Delta T < 2.5°C
  • Protection of modules IP67

LFP Prismatic Cells

For industrial solutions, we basically use LiFePO4: this chemistry is more stable than NMC and is better suited for stationary energy storage. The reference resource is more than 6000 cycles at 90% DOD, but the final service life depends on temperature, cycling mode and BMS settings.

  • Grade A Cells EVE / CATL
  • Resource 15+ years

3-Level Fire Suppression

Safety is not in the brochure, but in the architecture: early detection of CO, H2, VOC gases, smoke and temperature sensors, BMS control and fire suppression at the module or rack level. For sensitive equipment, we use solutions that do not disable the entire system after activation.

  • Integration Fire Alarm System
  • Protection Explosion-proof valves

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Briefly about the technology, economics, licensing, safety and maintenance of BESS/UZE industrial energy storage systems.

What is the real payback of industrial BESS in Ukraine?
For some industrial facilities, the payback can be invested in 3–5 years, but honestly: it depends on the load schedule, tariffs, the number of outages, the cost of downtime and the operating mode of BESS. The strongest scenarios are day/night arbitrage, Peak Shaving, reduction of diesel operation and protection of production from emergency stops.
How is BESS more profitable than a diesel generator?
A generator is useful as an emergency backup, but a kWh of it is usually more expensive due to fuel, service, depreciation and logistics. BESS is charged from the network or SES, gives energy without noise and picks up the load in milliseconds. The best scheme is often not "BESS or diesel", but BESS + diesel: the battery takes short outages and peaks, the generator remains for long breakdowns.
What is the lifespan of lithium batteries (LFP)?
In industrial BESS, we use Tier-1 LiFePO4 cells, in particular CATL and EVE. Resource benchmark — 6000–8000 cycles with DOD up to 90%. In actual operation, service life depends on temperature, C-rate, depth of discharge and BMS settings. That is why we do not separate the battery from the cooling and control system.
Do I need a license to install a BESS (100 kW - 1 MW)?
For BESS, which works at the counter of the enterprise and serves own consumption, a generation license is usually not required. If the connection scheme, contracted power or voltage class changes, you need to update the technical specifications at your local authority. If work is planned in the market of auxiliary services, the regulatory part is considered separately.
How fire-hazardous are industrial drives?
LFP chemistry is more thermally stable than NMC, so it is more often chosen for stationary industrial systems. But safe chemistry does not cancel normal design. Cabinets and containers are provided with BMS, temperature control, smoke and gas detectors, partitioning and fire extinguishing system. The benchmark is international requirements such as UL 9540A and the logic of Ukrainian fire regulations.
Is it possible to sell excess energy to the network (Net Billing)?
So, for objects with their own SES, Net Billing can become a separate financial scenario. Excess energy is fed into the grid, and funds are used to pay for future consumption. But BESS is needed not only for selling surpluses. Often it is more profitable to increase self-consumption, smooth out peaks and work in hours of a more expensive tariff.
Where is the equipment installed? Do you need a special room?
We usually consider two formats:
  • Indoor: server or battery cabinets for a dry technical room with ventilation and controlled temperature.
  • Outdoor: outdoor cabinets or containers IP55/IP65 with climate control, heating, cooling and installation on a prepared base.
Is full-time staff required to maintain BESS?
A full-time operator at the cabinet is not required. The BESS works automatically under the control of the EMS, and the BMS monitors the cells, voltages, temperatures and status of the modules. Deviations are seen by the dispatching service and the client's responsible energy engineer. For an industrial facility, this is important: a malfunction must be detected before it becomes downtime.
What is ESaaS (Energy Storage as a Service)?
ESaaS is a model in which the customer does not purchase the BESS as a capital asset, but pays for the energy result: saved, surrendered or optimized kWh. For the facility, this is a way to reduce the initial CAPEX and transfer part of the costs to OPEX. The model makes sense for projects above 200 kW, where the economy is confirmed by the load profile, tariffs and contract term.
Is it possible to earn from network balancing (FCR/aFRR)?
So, for BESS from 1 MW, participation in the market of auxiliary services can be considered: FCR and aFRR. It is no longer just an "enterprise reserve" but a marketable asset with requirements for response speed, available capacity, dispatch and certification. Such a scenario must be calculated separately: the company's own savings plus potential income from the available capacity to stabilize the network frequency.
What is Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and how does it work?
A VPP, or virtual power plant, combines multiple distributed BESSs through an EMS platform into a single managed energy resource. For the owner, it is interesting when a single system of 100-500 kW is too small for the market, but in a pool of other objects can work as part of a larger portfolio. The equipment should be equipped with such a possibility at the design stage.
What batteries besides LFP are there for industrial BESS?
In addition to LFP, there are NMC, Na-ion, flow batteries and other technologies. For industrial BESS, we now most often choose LiFePO4, because it is an understandable balance of safety, resource and cost. Na-ion is interesting for long storage and cold climates, but for responsible facilities it should be implemented after checking the specific manufacturer, guarantees, BMS and service support.
