Since 2022, Ukrainian business lives under the constant threat of blackouts. Massive attacks on energy infrastructure, generation shortages, and aging grids create a situation where power outages are not a matter of "if," but a matter of "when." BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) offers a fundamentally different approach to backup power compared to diesel generators: instant switching, zero fuel costs and decades of trouble-free operation.

Energy reality of Ukraine: 2022-2025

Systematic missile and drone strikes on energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine in October 2022 created an unprecedented energy supply crisis. Understanding the scale of the problem helps to appreciate the importance of autonomous energy supply for business.

October 2022 — The first wave

The beginning of massive strikes on the energy infrastructure. 30-40% of generating capacities were destroyed. Outage schedules across the country are 4-12 hours a day.

Winter 2022-2023 is a critical period

Power deficit up to 30%. Emergency shutdowns without warning. Enterprises lost up to 40% of working time. Mass procurement of DSU.

Summer-Autumn 2023 — Restoration and new strikes

Partial restoration of capacities. New attacks on TPP and TPP. Introduction of scheduled outage schedules during peak hours.

Winter 2023-2024 — Repeated crisis

More than 50% of heat generation was destroyed. Record deficit of 4-6 GW. Outages of 6-18 hours a day in some regions.

2024-2025 — New normality

Business is adapting to the "new normal". The demand for autonomous power systems is growing. BESS becomes a strategic asset, not a luxury.

BESS vs Diesel Generator: Full Comparison

The diesel generator was the first response of the business to the crisis. But after 2-3 years of operation, companies are increasingly looking for an alternative. That's why.

20 milliseconds - why it's critical

Home the advantage of BESS over a diesel generator is the switching time. 20 milliseconds is UPS-grade response, invisible to any hardware. For comparison: a diesel generator needs 10-30 seconds to enter the operating mode (start-up, warm-up, synchronization). What happens in those 10-30 seconds:

IT infrastructure

Servers reboot, databases can be damaged. Recovery time — from 15 minutes to hours. Loss of data in transactions.

CNC machines

The processing program is reset. The workpiece is damaged. Machine calibration — 30-60 minutes. The spindle may jam.

Refrigeration chambers

The compressor stops. When restarting, the starting current is 5-7x. Risk of damage to the compressor with frequent cycles.

Conveyor production

Complete stop of the line. Lack of products in the processing area. Restart time — 30-120 min depending on the process.

"For one blackout without UPS switching, we lost an order worth UAH 450,000 - workpieces on CNC machines were damaged, and the server of the ERP system needed 4 hours to restore. After installing BESS at 300 kWh, we do not feel any outages at all." — Production director, machine-building plant, Dnipro

Black Start: Start of zero

Black Start is the ability of the system to start up after a complete power outage, without an external network. BESS of grid-forming inverter (for example, Deye SUN-50K-SG04LP3) forms a "virtual network" — sets a frequency of 50 Hz and a voltage of 380 V, creating a stable power supply for the entire facility.

A diesel generator can also perform a Black Start, but requires a working starter battery, warm-up (1-3 min), and often manual start. BESS does this automatically in 20ms, without staff intervention, day or night, at any time years.

When BESS and when Diesel?

BESS does not always replace the generator - often they work together in a hybrid scheme. Here are the recommendations:

BESS as a single backup (no generator)

  • Outage up to 4-8 hours
  • Load up to 200 kW
  • Critical equipment (servers, CNC, medical)
  • Urban location (noise, emissions are unacceptable)
  • Additional functions are required (peak shaving, arbitration)

BESS + Diesel (hybrid)

  • Outage 8-24 hours or more
  • The load is more than 200 kW
  • Production of continuous cycle
  • Remote facilities with no network recovery forecast
  • BESS provides UPS switching, the generator provides long-term autonomy

Real case: Logistics center, Kyiv region.

Challenge & Problem Statement

  • Logistics hub 3000 m2 of cold storage (-18°C)
  • Load: 150 kW (compressors, lighting, IT)
  • Shutdown: 6-12 hours a day (winter 2023-2024)
  • Cummins 200 kVA generator: costs UAH 5,000/day for fuel
  • At each switchover: start shock of compressors, failures of the WMS system

Solutions

  • BESS: 600 kWh / 200 kW (CATL EnerOne + Deye inverters)
  • Mode: UPS (instant switching) + Cycle Charging of the generator
  • The generator only works to recharge the BESS at 80-100% capacity

Result

  • Zero power outages — compressors run continuously
  • The generator works for 2-3 hours instead of 10-12
  • Fuel savings: 75% (from 5000 to 1200 UAH/day)
  • WMS system does not freeze - zero lost orders
  • Payback Period: 18 months

Frequently Asked Questions

For how many hours will BESS last in a complete blackout?
Depends on capacity and load. The formula is simple: Time (h) = BESS Capacity (kW*h) x 0.8 (DOD) / Load (kW). For example, 500 kWh at a load of 100 kW = 4 hours of autonomy. For long blackouts (8+ hours), we recommend the BESS + Diesel hybrid scheme.
Can BESS replace UPS for server room?
Yes. Modern BESS of grid-forming inverter provides switching in <20 ms, which meets the VFI (Voltage and Frequency Independent) standard for UPS. This is the equivalent of Online Double Conversion UPS. At the same time, BESS has a much larger capacity (hundreds of kWh compared to tens of typical UPS) and additional functions.
What if the blackout is longer than the BESS supply?
Three options: 1) Hybrid generator scheme — BESS provides UPS switching, the generator charges the battery; 2) Add PV panels — during the day, the sun feeds the load and charges the BESS; 3) Scale BESS — LiFePO4 batteries are modular, capacity can be added later.
Is it safe to install BESS indoors?
LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate battery) is the safest lithium ion chemistry. Thermal acceleration temperature >270°C (versus 150°C in NMC). If ventilation and fire safety standards (NFPA 855 system) are followed, the BESS can be safely placed in specially equipped rooms or in external IP55 containers.
How much does BESS cost for backup power?
Approximate cost: $200-350 per kWh of installed turnkey system (battery + inverter + EMS + installation). For an office, 30 kWh (3-4 hours of autonomy) — from $8,000. For production, 500 kWh — from $120,000. For an industrial facility, 2 MW*h — from $400,000. The exact cost is determined by the feasibility study after an energy audit.
How does BESS work in sub-zero winter?
LiFePO4 batteries have an operating range from -20°C to +55°C. At a temperature below 0°C, the charging capacity decreases (discharge works normally). Industrial BESSs are equipped with self-heating systems that automatically maintain a temperature above +5°C. Container solutions (CATL EnerOne, BYD MC Cube) have a built-in climate system.
