Choosing a battery energy storage system (BESS) for your facility in Ukraine is not about picking a city from a list. It is about matching the technology to your load curve, grid connection, and tariff structure. First Criterion: Your Load Profile and Peak Demand

Before any talk of kW or kWh, you need a clear picture of your facility's daily and seasonal load. Without a load profile, any capacity figure is a guess. We start with a 15-minute interval measurement over at least two weeks. This tells us your base load, peaks, and how long those peaks last.

For peak shaving, the BESS must cover the difference between your average consumption and the peak. For backup, you need to know the critical load and the required autonomy. For energy arbitrage, you need the tariff schedule and your ability to shift load. Each application leads to a different battery size and discharge duration.

Second Criterion: Grid Connection Parameters and Voltage Class

Your grid connection determines the inverter type and transformer requirements. At 0.4 kV, you are limited to about 1 MW of inverter capacity without a medium-voltage transformer. For larger systems, you need a 10/35 kV connection and a dedicated transformer. This adds cost and lead time.

If you want to feed energy back to the grid, that requires a separate permit. For behind-the-meter systems, we typically size the BESS to stay within your existing import capacity.

The economic case for BESS depends heavily on your tariff. If you are on a two-zone tariff (day/night), arbitrage is possible but the spread must cover the round-trip efficiency loss (about 85-90%). In Ukraine, current spreads are often 2-4 UAH/kWh, which can yield a payback of 5-8 years, but this is volatile.

For peak shaving, the demand charge is the key. If your tariff includes a capacity fee per kW, shaving 100 kW for 2 hours can save significant monthly costs. We calculate payback based on your actual tariff and load. Without that data, we cannot promise a payback period.

Common Mistakes When Selecting a BESS

The most common mistake is oversizing. Clients often ask for a system that covers 100% of their load, but that is rarely economical. A better approach is to target 80-90% of the peak shaving potential, which reduces cost and payback time.

Another mistake is ignoring future load growth. If you plan to add EV charging or expand production, the BESS should be modular. We design systems that can be expanded, but that requires planning from the start.

Finally, many buyers focus on the battery price per kWh, but the total cost includes inverters, cooling, containers, installation, and grid connection. A cheap battery with poor thermal management will degrade faster and increase maintenance costs.

Regional Nuances in Ukraine

Grid stability varies by region. In Kyiv and Lviv, the grid is relatively stable, but in Odesa and Kharkiv, outages can be frequent due to infrastructure age or wartime damage. This makes backup a higher priority in those areas, which changes the discharge duration and battery chemistry choice.
