Connection is possible – but only with the right technical conditions

Khmelnytskoblenergo is the distribution system operator. They issue the technical conditions (TU) for connecting generation and storage. In our experience, a BESS connected behind your meter, without export to the grid, is treated as a load modification, not a new generation source. That simplifies the process, but you still need their approval.

We handle the application, prepare the single-line diagram, and coordinate the protection settings. The TU will specify the voltage class (0.4 kV or 10 kV), the allowed short-circuit contribution, and the metering requirements. Without a proper TU, the grid may reject your project at the final inspection – so this is not a step to skip.

Assume a food factory with an average load of 800 kW and a peak of 1.2 MW. The demand charge is ~200 UAH/kW/month. A 400 kW / 800 kWh BESS, with a 20% peak reduction, saves 80 kW * 200 UAH * 12 = 192,000 UAH/year. Adding energy arbitrage (night vs day tariff difference of ~1.5 UAH/kWh) on a full discharge cycle every day: 800 kWh * 1.5 * 365 = 438,000 UAH/year. Total ~630,000 UAH/year.

The installed cost of such a system, in a container, is about 12-15 million UAH. Payback is 4-6 years, assuming stable tariffs.
