Diesel Generator: Still Useful, But Expensive Per kWh

A diesel genset covers blackouts and provides reactive power. For a 500 kW load, a modern unit costs roughly 2.5–3.5 million UAH installed, plus fuel at 30–40 UAH per litre. Running it 200 hours a year adds up to 1.5 million UAH in fuel alone. It also needs maintenance every 500 hours.

If you only need backup for a few hours during grid failure, diesel is fine. But for daily peak shaving or frequency regulation, the cost per kWh becomes absurd. You also have to deal with fuel logistics and emissions.

UPS: Only for Critical Loads, Not for Energy Arbitrage

Uninterruptible power supplies are for protecting PLCs, servers, and control systems. A typical 100 kVA UPS with 15 minutes of battery costs around 1.2 million UAH. That is justifiable for a crane control panel or an alumina calciner's control system.

But you cannot use a UPS to shave a 2 MW peak or to sell flexibility to the grid. Its battery is sized for minutes, not hours. And at 0.4 kV, a large UPS becomes inefficient — you need medium voltage for big loads.

Raising Contracted Capacity: The Grid Option

If your production line grows, you can apply to Mykolaivoblenergo for a higher contracted capacity. This means paying a monthly fee for the right to draw more power. For a 1 MW increase, the connection fee might be 3–5 million UAH, depending on the distance to the substation and the required network upgrades.

That money is sunk — you pay even if you rarely use the extra capacity. Also, the application process takes 6–12 months, and you must provide a feasibility study. Sometimes the local grid simply cannot support the additional load without reinforcing lines.

Battery Storage: When It Makes Economic Sense

A BESS of 1 MW / 2 MWh (LiFePO4, liquid cooling, containerized) costs about 8–12 million UAH, fully installed. It can shave peaks, reduce contracted capacity, provide backup during outages, and even participate in ancillary services if the market allows.

For a port terminal with a 2 MW crane load that peaks for 30 minutes, storage can cut the contracted capacity from 2.5 MW to 2.0 MW, saving 300,000 UAH per year in capacity fees. Payback is 5–7 years. For a shipyard with welding loads, storage smooths the demand curve and avoids penalties.

At 0.4 kV, storage works for loads up to 500 kW. For larger systems, we install at 10 kV. We always start with a load profile audit — without that, any payback figure is rough.

How to Connect a BESS in Mykolaiv: Technical Conditions
