Industrial Battery Energy Storage in Kyiv: Engineering Answers, Not Marketing

If your facility in Kyiv City draws 100 kW or more, you have probably seen the grid tariff curve and the queues for connection. Battery storage is one of the four ways to deal with it, and for most sites it is the only one that pays back. Why BESS for Kyiv? Because the Alternatives Have Limits

Kyiv has roughly 2.9 million people and a dense industrial mix: business centres, data centres, food processing plants, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, logistics hubs. All of them share one problem: the grid from DTEK Kyiv Electric Grids is not always sufficient, and connection requests can take months. A diesel genset covers an outage, but it does not pay for itself when idle. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) only bridges seconds. Raising contracted capacity with DTEK means paying for new transformer capacity, which is expensive and often unavailable.

Storage is different. It does not replace the grid, but it shaves your peak demand, shifts consumption to cheaper night tariffs, and provides backup for your critical loads. At 0.4 kV you are limited to about 400 kW per connection, but most sites in Kyiv already run at 10 kV or 35 kV. For those, a containerised 1 MW / 2 MWh system is a standard upgrade.

Diesel Genset: When It Still Makes Sense

A diesel genset is justified if you need 72+ hours of autonomous operation and have no natural gas supply. In Kyiv, that is rare. Data centres and hospitals may have them, but they run on fuel that costs about 28 UAH/litre, and the generator itself only works during tests. A typical 500 kVA genset burns 70–100 litres per hour at full load — that is 2,500 UAH per hour just in fuel.

Storage cannot replace a long-duration genset, but it can reduce its size. A 1 MWh battery can handle the first 15 minutes of an outage while a genset starts and synchronises. That combination is standard for Tier III data centres in Kyiv. If you have no genset, storage alone gives you 1–4 hours of ride-through depending on your load.

UPS vs. Battery Storage: Different Jobs

Your existing UPS protects against micro-outages and voltage sags. It does not shift energy or cut demand charges. A BESS does both, but it has a slower response — 20 ms to switch, which is fine for most industrial loads but not for IT equipment. That is why we often install a small UPS in series with a BESS.

For a business centre in Pechersk or a logistics hub near Boryspil, the UPS is already there. The BESS is an add-on that pays for itself by reducing the 30-minute peak demand. For a food processing plant with cold storage, the UPS is irrelevant — the BESS becomes the primary backup, and it can also be charged from solar or during night hours at 2.5 UAH/kWh instead of 6.5 UAH/kWh daytime.

Raising Contracted Capacity: The DTEK Connection Process

To raise your contracted capacity with DTEK Kyiv Electric Grids, you submit an application and receive technical conditions (TU). The TU will specify new transformer capacity, cable sections, and protection settings. For a 1 MW increase at 10 kV, prepare for a fee in the range of 3–5 million UAH, plus the cost of new switchgear. And the timeline is 6–12 months if the substation has spare capacity — otherwise, longer.

Storage avoids that. You keep your existing connection and install a battery that charges during low demand and discharges at your peak. The grid sees a flat profile, so your contracted capacity stays the same. DTEK still has to approve the storage connection, but that is a simpler TU: usually a 0.4 kV or 10 kV connection with a bidirectional meter. We handle that paperwork as part of the EPC contract.

Every project starts with a load profile. Without that, any payback figure is rough — we can give a ballpark, but the real number depends on your 30-minute peak and the tariff structure. For a typical Kyiv business centre with a 1 MW load, a 500 kW / 1 MWh system costs about $350,000 installed, and the payback is 4–6 years under current tariffs. For a data centre with 24/7 load, storage rarely pays back — you need a generator for long outages. We will tell you if storage is not right for you.

How long does it take to get a connection approval from DTEK for a BESS?
Under local technical conditions (TU), a storage connection is usually approved in 2–4 months if you already have a 0.4 kV or 10 kV point of connection. DTEK Kyiv Electric Grids treats it as a distributed generation facility, so you need a bidirectional meter and a protection scheme. We prepare the documents and coordinate with DTEK as part of our EPC service.
What is the payback period for a battery storage system in Kyiv?
For a business centre or logistics hub with a clear peak demand, a 500 kW / 1 MWh system pays back in 4–6 years, based on current tariffs (day ~6.5 UAH/kWh, night ~2.5 UAH/kWh). For a data centre with a flat load, storage does not pay back — you need a different solution. We always run a feasibility study with your actual load profile before quoting.
Can I use a BESS as a backup during blackouts?
Yes, but only for a limited time. A 1 MWh battery can cover a 100 kW load for 10 hours, but a 500 kW load for only 2 hours. For longer outages, you need a diesel genset. In Kyiv, where blackouts are rare but possible, we often combine a smaller BESS (1–2 MWh) with an existing UPS and a genset for extended autonomy.
Do you install residential energy storage?
