Industrial Battery Energy Storage for Poltava Oblast

Before you buy a battery, you need to know your load curve, your tariff structure, and your grid connection limits. This page is a pre-design survey checklist for Poltava industrial sites, written by engineers who have done feasibility studies for this region.

Step 1: Measure What You Actually Consume

Start with a minimum of one year of 15-minute interval data from your automated metering system. If you don't have it, we install temporary loggers at 0.4 kV or 10 kV feeders. For oil and gas extraction sites, pumping loads vary with well pressure; for ore processing, crushers and mills create sharp peaks. Food industry plants, especially dairy and meat processing, have refrigeration compressors that dominate demand.

Without this data, any payback calculation is guesswork. A typical payback for BESS in Poltava is 4-7 years, but only if the storage is sized to shave the highest peaks and capture the difference between day and night tariffs.

Step 2: Pull the Right Documents

You need your current contract with Poltavaoblenergo, your tariff class (1st or 2nd class voltage), and your annual consumption in kWh. Also gather your unilateral connection agreement and the technical conditions (TU) issued by the DSO. If you plan to increase connected capacity, the TU will need to be revised – that process takes 30-60 days.

Do not forget the grid stability requirements: for installations above 50 kW, Poltavaoblenergo may require a power quality study. We provide that as part of the audit.

Step 3: Verify Grid Constraints with Poltavaoblenergo

Your local DSO, Poltavaoblenergo, handles connection applications and technical conditions. You cannot bypass them. At 0.4 kV, you are limited to about 100-200 kW of storage without a transformer upgrade; at 10 kV, you have more headroom. Check the actual available short-circuit capacity at your point of connection – we can request that from the DSO on your behalf.

Also verify if your site has a standby diesel generator. If yes, the BESS can be integrated into the existing emergency power system, but the transfer switch logic must be designed carefully.

Step 4: The Solution – LiFePO4 Containerized Systems

For industrial sites in Poltava, we recommend containerized BESS with LiFePO4 cells from CATL or other Tier-1 manufacturers. Liquid cooling ensures stable operation in Ukrainian winters and summers. Each unit includes a BMS, EMS/SCADA, and is rated IP55/C4 for outdoor installation. Sizes range from 50 kW to 5 MW, and we typically design for 2-4 hours of discharge duration.

For example, a 1 MW / 2 MWh system can cover a 500 kW load for 4 hours during a grid outage. But do not expect to run your entire plant – only critical loads.

Step 5: Commissioning and Service

We are a full-cycle EPC contractor: audit, design, supply, installation, commissioning, and service. We are based in Kyiv (+380 44 339-50-20, engineering@bess.com.ua). We do not sell residential storage – that is SolarProm.com.ua. For industrial clients, we provide remote monitoring and annual maintenance contracts.

After commissioning, Poltavaoblenergo will inspect the installation and issue a certificate of connection. We support you through that process. Remember: no storage system is a license to ignore grid codes – your BESS must comply with Ukrainian standards for parallel operation.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a BESS installed in Poltava?
After the site audit and design, typical lead time is 3-4 months for equipment delivery and installation. Connection approval from Poltavaoblenergo can add 1-2 months depending on the complexity of your technical conditions.
Can BESS help with power outages in Poltava?
Yes, but only for critical loads. A 500 kW/1 MWh system can power a medium-sized food processing line for 2 hours. For longer outages, you would need a larger battery or a generator as backup.
What is the payback period for industrial BESS in Poltava?
Typically 4-7 years, based on tariff arbitrage and peak shaving. The exact figure depends on your load profile and the difference between day and night tariffs. We calculate it during the audit.
Do I need to change my connection agreement with Poltavaoblenergo?
If your BESS is for on-site consumption only and does not exceed your existing connection capacity, you usually do not. If you want to export power to the grid, you must apply for a new connection or modify your technical conditions.
What maintenance does a BESS require?
We recommend annual preventive maintenance: checking battery health, cooling system, and safety systems. Remote monitoring is included in our service contract. LiFePO4 batteries have a life of 6000-8000 cycles, so with daily operation that's 15-20 years.
