Integrating Sungrow Power Conversion Systems into Industrial Battery Storage

Sungrow is one of the largest makers of ESS power conversion systems globally. We have built industrial storage plants on their PowerTitan and SC series equipment. Here is how we make it work, what we check on delivery, and what you should expect in warranty and service.

Sungrow PCS models
PowerTitan (containerized), SC series (standalone)
Typical DC voltage range
800–1500 V DC
Efficiency
up to 98.5% (typical 97-98%)
Warranty
5 years standard, extendable to 10-20

Where Sungrow Fits in Your BESS Topology

In a typical industrial battery storage system, the PCS (power conversion system) is the bridge between the DC battery bank and the AC grid. Sungrow supplies exactly that: the inverter and control electronics that convert DC from LiFePO4 battery racks to three-phase AC at 0.4 kV or 6/10/35 kV, depending on the transformer.

The PowerTitan series is a containerized solution—battery, BMS, fire suppression, and PCS in one ISO container. The SC series are standalone PCS units that we integrate with third-party battery racks and our own BMS/EMS. Both are grid-forming capable, which means they can black-start and stabilize weak grids—something we use in industrial microgrids.

In our designs, we place the PCS between the DC bus (typically 800–1500 V DC) and the AC coupling transformer. The Sungrow unit handles reactive power, frequency regulation, and peak shaving. We integrate it with our EMS/SCADA via Modbus TCP or IEC 61850, so you get one control interface.

What Breaks or Costs Money First? The PCS Is It

In any BESS, the PCS is the most failure-prone component. Power electronics, cooling fans, capacitors, and IGBT modules see thermal cycling and electrical stress. After 5–7 years, you will likely need to replace fans and capacitors, and possibly IGBTs. That is why we always check the PCS cooling system and electrical connections during commissioning.

Another cost driver is poor integration: if the PCS and BMS do not communicate correctly, you get nuisance trips or reduced throughput. We have seen plants where the PCS was installed without proper grid code settings—resulting in penalties from the DSO. That is why we spend time on site to configure protection relays and voltage/frequency ride-through parameters.

Our approach: we use Sungrow PCS because they have a proven track record and we know their failure modes. We stock common spare parts (fans, fuses, control boards) and have a service contract with Sungrow for warranty repairs.

How Storage Closes the Gap

Industrial customers in Ukraine face two problems: high demand charges and unstable grid voltage. A BESS with a Sungrow PCS can shave peaks—discharging during peak tariff hours—and provide reactive power support, which reduces penalties for power factor. In our feasibility studies, we often see payback periods of 4–7 years for industrial facilities with a load of 1 MW or more.

For grid-forming applications, the Sungrow PCS can operate in island mode, which is critical for sites with sensitive processes. We have designed systems that ride through blackouts without a hiccup, using the storage as a virtual synchronous generator.

The numbers depend on your tariff structure and load profile. Without that data, any payback figure is rough. But with a typical two-zone tariff in Ukraine (day/night), we see savings of 10–20% on the electricity bill.

Incoming Inspection and Acceptance: What We Check

When we receive a Sungrow PCS, we do not just check the crate. We verify:

  • Serial numbers match the delivery note and warranty registration.
  • No visible damage—especially on the cooling fins and control cabinets.
  • Terminal torque and insulation resistance (megger test) before energizing.
  • Firmware version and parameter set—we request the latest from Sungrow.
  • All communication ports (Ethernet, RS485) are functional.

We also perform a full power test at reduced load to verify efficiency and harmonic output. Only then we connect it to the battery and grid. This procedure has caught issues like a misconfigured DC bus voltage or a faulty cooling fan—before the unit goes live.

Warranty, Service, and Spare Parts in Ukraine

Sungrow offers a standard 5-year warranty on their PCS, extendable to 10 or 20 years. We have experience with warranty claims: the process is straightforward, but you need to work with an authorized service center—we are not one, but we partner with local representatives to expedite repairs.

Spare parts availability in Ukraine is decent for common items like fans and fuses, but for IGBT modules or control boards, you may wait 2–4 weeks. That is why we recommend keeping a small stock of critical spares on site, especially for continuous-process industries.

We provide our own service contract that covers preventive maintenance (every 6 months) and emergency response within 24 hours. Our engineers are trained on Sungrow equipment and have access to their technical documentation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the typical efficiency of a Sungrow PCS?
Sungrow PCS units typically have a maximum efficiency of 98.5% or higher, but actual efficiency depends on DC voltage, load level, and ambient temperature. In our projects, we see around 97-98% at rated power, which is competitive.
Can I integrate a Sungrow PCS with CATL batteries?
Yes, we do it regularly. We use CATL LiFePO4 cells in our battery racks and connect them to Sungrow PCS via a compatible BMS. The key is to match the DC voltage range and communication protocol (CAN or Modbus). We handle the engineering to make it seamless.
How long does it take to commission a BESS with a Sungrow PCS?
Typical commissioning takes 2-4 weeks on site, depending on system size and complexity. We do a factory acceptance test (FAT) before shipping, which reduces on-site issues. For a 1 MW system, the site work is usually under a month.
What is the warranty on a new Sungrow PCS?
Sungrow offers a 5-year standard warranty, extendable to 10 or 20 years at additional cost. We can arrange the extension during the project. The warranty covers manufacturing defects and workmanship, but not damage from misuse or lightning strikes.
Do you provide service for existing BESS installations?
Yes, we offer service contracts for any BESS, regardless of original integrator. We have experience with Sungrow, SMA, and other PCS. Our service includes remote monitoring, preventive maintenance, and repair with a 24-hour response time.
