Using Huawei Inverters and FusionSolar in Industrial Battery Storage
Huawei's LUNA2000 and SUN2000 are widely used in residential and C&I storage. For industrial projects, we integrate these components into larger BESS architectures. Here's what a design engineer should know.

Where Huawei Fits in the BESS Topology
In a typical industrial BESS, the battery rack (LiFePO4 cells, e.g., CATL) connects to a DC/DC converter, then to a DC/AC inverter, and finally to the grid or load. Huawei's SUN2000 is a string inverter with integrated battery ports; LUNA2000 is a modular battery system with pack-level control. In our designs, we often use Huawei inverters as the power conversion stage for LV (0.4 kV) systems, with a separate BMS/EMS handling the overall control.
The FusionSolar platform provides cloud monitoring, but for industrial sites, we typically integrate it with a higher-level SCADA via Modbus TCP or similar. The pack-level distributed control in LUNA2000 improves safety and balancing, which is useful when you have multiple racks in parallel.
Comparing Alternatives: Diesel, UPS, Grid Upgrade, Storage
Every industrial site needs to decide how to handle power quality, backup, and peak shaving. A diesel genset is justified for long-duration backup (hours) and when there is no grid connection. However, fuel logistics and maintenance can be costly. A UPS (usually double-conversion) is for critical loads needing <10 s transfer time, but it is expensive per kWh and not for long durations.
Raising contracted capacity (e.g., from 500 kVA to 750 kVA) is a simple fix for occasional overloads, but the monthly fee increases permanently. Storage (with Huawei inverters) is justified when you have a load profile with peaks >2 hours and a differential between peak and off-peak tariffs. Payback in Ukraine is typically 4-6 years if you shift 200-400 kWh/day. Without a load profile, that figure is rough.
Incoming Inspection and Acceptance
Before accepting Huawei equipment, check the following: physical damage, firmware version (must be compatible with your EMS), and the presence of all communication adapters (e.g., SmartLogger, dongles). Verify the battery modules' SOC and voltage balance—LUNA2000 modules should be within 50 mV of each other. Have the supplier provide test certificates for each unit.
At commissioning, run a capacity test at 0.5C and keep the site's load profile for one week to verify performance. Also, confirm that the inverters' grid code settings match Ukrainian requirements (e.g., UFR, OVP, frequency). If unsure, ask for a grid code compliance letter from Huawei.
Warranty, Service, and Spare Parts in Ukraine
Huawei offers a standard 10-year warranty on LUNA2000 and SUN2000, but the terms require professional installation and registration. In Ukraine, service is provided through Huawei's partners—we are not one, but we have experience integrating their equipment and can arrange warranty repairs via the official channel. Spare parts (like control boards, fans) are available from Huawei's European warehouse, lead time 2-3 weeks.
For critical systems, we recommend keeping a spare inverter module or an extra battery module. Note that the warranty may be void if you use non-Huawei batteries with their inverters, so plan the BOM carefully. We always check the compatibility list before ordering.
Integration Experience and Practical Notes
We have integrated Huawei inverters into several 50-500 kW systems. At 0.4 kV, this works fine; for MV connection (10 kV), you need an external transformer and protection. The FusionSolar cloud is convenient, but some industrial clients prefer a local SCADA; we use a gateway to export data to Modbus TCP. That requires the Huawei device's RS485 or Ethernet port.
One limitation: the SUN2000's maximum battery voltage is 1000 V, so you need to size the battery string accordingly. Also, pack-level control in LUNA2000 means you cannot mix different battery capacities in one string. If you need more than 100 kWh, you may need multiple inverters. We can design a system with up to 5 MW using a combination of Huawei inverters and other equipment, but for large scale, consider central inverters from other OEMs.
