Engineering with BYD Components in Industrial BESS
We integrate BYD Blade cells and modules into industrial storage systems. Here is the pre-design survey checklist we run — what to measure, which documents to pull, which grid constraints to verify, and only then the solution.
Key parameters
Where BYD Components Sit in the BESS Topology
In a typical BESS, the DC block consists of cells arranged into modules, then packs, then racks. BYD supplies the cells and modules — the Blade LFP cells with high volumetric density and integrated modules. We integrate these into our own cabinet or container designs, pairing them with our BMS, thermal management, and power conversion systems.
The AC block includes the PCS, transformer, and grid connection. BYD's role stops at the DC terminals. Our engineering responsibility covers the interface: voltage matching, current ratings, thermal coordination, and communication protocols between the BYD modules and the rest of the system.
Pre-Design Survey: What to Measure and Verify On-Site
Before any design, we walk the site with a checklist. Measure available area for container or cabinet placement, access for heavy transport, and crane or forklift capacity. Verify the grid connection point: voltage level, fault level, and available short-circuit capacity. If you plan to connect at 0.4 kV, note that for MW-scale systems you will likely need a 10 kV or 35 kV step-up transformer.
Pull the grid connection permit (tekhnicheskiye usloviya) and check for restrictions on export power, reactive power capability, or ramp rate limits. Obtain the latest electricity tariff schedule and load profile for at least one year — without that, payback calculations are rough estimates at best.
Incoming Inspection and Acceptance of BYD Components
When the BYD cells and modules arrive, we follow a documented inspection. Check packaging integrity and look for signs of transit damage. Verify the batch numbers against the packing list and certificates of conformity. Measure open-circuit voltage (OCV) of each module to detect imbalance or internal damage — deviations beyond ±2% of nominal indicate a problem.
We also check the insulation resistance between terminals and case, and visually inspect busbars and connectors for corrosion or deformation. For a large shipment, we sample a statistical subset, but for high-value cells we often test 100% OCV and impedance. Document everything — this becomes the baseline for warranty claims if issues arise later.
Warranty, Service, and Spare Parts in Ukraine
BYD's warranty covers cells and modules for defects in materials and workmanship, typically 10 years or a certain cycle count, whichever comes first. However, warranty terms depend on the specific supply agreement — we act as integrator, not an authorized dealer, so we pass through the manufacturer's warranty and support it with our own service contract.
Spare parts availability in Ukraine is a real concern. We stock critical spares for systems we install: BMS boards, contactors, fuses, and a small quantity of replacement modules. For non-critical items, we rely on air freight from BYD's regional warehouses; lead times are typically 2–4 weeks. We include this in the maintenance schedule so you are never stuck with a dead string.
Integration Experience and Engineering Constraints
We have built industrial storage systems from 50 kW to 5 MW using BYD cells. The Blade architecture gives high packing density, which helps when footprint is tight. But it also means thermal management is critical — we always design liquid cooling for cells, not just air, especially for high C-rate applications.
At 0.4 kV, we rarely go above 500 kW per PCS due to current limits; for larger systems we move to medium voltage. We also ensure the BMS communicates with our EMS/SCADA via Modbus TCP or IEC 61850, depending on the grid operator's requirements. Every project is different — that is why the survey comes first.
